Phong Bui: Occupy Rail - A Social Environment

September 7th, 2017

School of Visual Arts - New York, NY

MFA Art Writing welcomes The Brooklyn Rail co-founder and creative director Phong Bui, who will speak on “Occupy Rail,” a two-part endeavor which seeks to encourage and support motivated individuals in various cities in the U.S. to create their own Rail publication. Occupy Rail also stages one cycle of the Rail's production at a selected venue for one month, turning the Rail into a "social environment." This aims to be a consequential step following in the footsteps of Joseph Beuys’ "social sculpture" and Nicholas Bourriaud's relational aesthetics.

Columbus College of Art and Design - Columbus, OH

Founder and editor of (and frequent contributor to) the respected publication The Brooklyn Rail, Phong Bui has curated more than 40 monographic and group shows since 2000, including a first-anniversary commemoration of Hurricane Sandy, Come Together: Surviving Sandy, Year 1, which Roberta Smith in a New York Times review described as "...a sprawling, encompassing, inspiring exhibition." The show was also ranked as New York's #1 exhibition in 2013 by Jerry Saltz of New York magazine.
